# Resolution

If the user or counterparty receives a malicious payload, latent response, or for any reason at all, they may submit their latest balance state to their original blockchain. This will trigger a 24 hour dispute period that will release [VIPE](https://docs.vdex.trade/protocol/whitepaper/vault-of-isolated-participant-escrow) funds in accordance with the balance state that:

* Matches the ChainID of the blockchain
* Includes signatures from both user and counterparty
* Exceeds the nonces of all other submitted balance states
